American illustration art is unique in itself. Much of it was created in a time that predates movies, radio and television. It was an eye on culture, history and an Aladdin's lamp to things most people would never have seen if it weren't for this published art.

My talk will cover a period of time when the illustrator flourished, a time when illustrators were stars and made extraordinary incomes. During this golden age, the artists were not looked upon as something less, they were fine artists. They illustrated stories and adventures to the delight of the populace. Later, things changed. Advertising art became the means for these artists to pay the bills – it paid more than story illustrations. The next change was photography and TV, which changed the balance of where entertainment came from.

Now, the illustrator is back. Books, book jackets, online images, design, all have turned the tide for fine art in the public domain. The demand for this artwork has not diminished. As for the paintings and drawings left behind, auction records, if you wish to use a dollar sign for success, has shown their work is well appreciated and wanted. Museums have opened to showcase narrative and storytelling art, to the delight of all.

So what I will be talking about is how much of this began and its impact on our world today.

Robert Horvath
is a retired Library Director, lifelong art collector, current Board Member and former Bd. Chairman of the Norman Rockwell Museum. His own paintings reside in several military museums and local Berkshire establishments and collections.

Possible topics which have been proposed include:

“What happens to our art when our heirs get it?”
“how to ship large art works?”
“What did you learn The hard way and can share with other artists”
"to lease or not to lease"

Please share with us any answers you have to this question as probably most folks would be interested in what you learned.

One offering is “Color Interaction using Josef Alber's course"  (five of us met weekly  from January to June, learned a lot and plan to continue this fall and want to share this with other interested artists willing to work in small groups (we zoomed!).

“Creating almost anything exhilarates me. My art has taken many forms including: painting, photography, writing, cooking, recipe creating, video, website creation, book design, publishing, and my newly discovered joy of beginning guitar and voice. All these expressions are unique as they revolve in a cycle that has revealed itself continuously throughout my life. When one pauses, the next cues up and plays.”
